how Andrew had the bright idea of real, honest baked beans
"Not so long ago, after a solid morning's work, I decided to reward myself with a substantial lunch of baked beans on toast. Familiar, easy and full of energy. When I opened the can of a very well-known brand, I was startled to see it contained a rather bright orange liquid with a few small beans visible on the surface. I thought, this simply isn't right. Since when has good tomato sauce been orange? And why is there so much liquid? Where was the onion, vegetables and herbs? Hungry as I was, I tipped the beans into a saucepan and heated them up. When I poured the contents over my toast, I was left with a pile of small white beans, a sea of orange sauce and a slice of soggy toast. I read the contents list on the can. Why were there so many strange items with numbers, colours and flavours? And why so much sugar? I knew that I could make a better baked bean meal than that...
..And that was the moment that I started the Thompson Family Food's journey, with a simple goal - to allow the New Zealand people to enjoy a classic dish with quality, healthy ingredients and no nasty extras. Real, honest food!"
